A study of two-formant models for vowel identification
An experiment has been performed where various two-formant models reported in the literature were assessed as to their ability to predict the formant frequencies obtained in a vowel identification task. An alternative model is proposed in which the auditory processing of vowel sounds is assumed to take place in two stages: a peripheral processing stage and a central processing stage. In the per...
متن کاملComparing Vowel Formant Normalization Methods
Results from a large-scale comparative study of vowel formant normalization methods are presented. Effectiveness of methods was evaluated by their ability to improve the equalization and alignment of speaker vowel spaces over raw Hertz measurements. Vowel-intrinsic methods performed poorly, while vowel-extrinsic, formant-intrinsic methods performed the best overall.
متن کاملFormant Correlates in Greek Fricative-Vowel Sequences
The present study examined F1 and F2 onset, as well as locus equations in Greek fricative – vowel sequences as distinctive cues for the fricative place of articulation. The effects of voicing, speaker’s gender and post-fricative vowel on both formants’ onset values and locus equations were also investigated. The results showed that F2 onset values distinguished fricatives in terms of place of a...
متن کاملThe Study of Vowel Space and Formant Structure in Mazani Language
Objective: One of the parameters showing the correct phonetic and phonological development is the correct and clear articulation of vowels is achieved by changing the shape of vocal cords through altering the height and position of the tongue and the movement of the lips and jaw. The tongue’s height and position are the basis of the production and difference of vowels. In other words, the raw s...
متن کاملMultichannel compression: effects of reduced spectral contrast on vowel identification.
PURPOSE To clarify if large numbers of wide dynamic range compression channels provide advantages for vowel identification and to measure its acoustic effects. Methods Eight vowels produced by 12 talkers in the /hVd/ context were compressed using 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 channels. Formant contrast indices (mean formant peak minus mean formant trough; maximum formant peak minus minimum formant trough)...
